Can Accessories Improve Your Interview?

Just a few weeks ago, I attended a party where some ladies were promoting a line of high fashion jewelry by the name of Park Lane. The head representative there was extremely lively and soon began entertaining the group with a few stories. She shared some of her background and told us how she began working with the company. During the story telling session, I heard her say something very interesting. She mentioned that over her years of selling jewelry, she's had quite a few customers that work in the HR field. They have often told her that job interviewers that wear nice jewelry have great interviews! We discussed this for a few moments and after the event I decided to do some thinking and researching about this. Though I don't agree completely with the idea that wearing jewelry in itself can help a person interview well, I have listed a few reasons why wearing jewelry to an interview can be beneficial.


1. Confidence

The motto is true that when you look good, you feel good. Typically women and men wear jewelry to enhance their look. I will personally say that I feel just a bit more confident when I see myself wearing a piece of sparkly jewelry. Moreover, whenever I look really nice I feel more confident and tend to have a better day. I will also say that wearing jewelry should not just be a confidence booster for women, but men as well. Most men I've met in the professional sector will also wear a really nice watch to top of their look as well. It's common for men to bring out their look with a nice and colorful tie. Men can also accessorize with man bracelets, rings, and glasses if they wear them

Really, whatever makes you feel comfortable and the most attractive, will allow for a better interview. One thing to be careful of is to make sure that you are not overly flashy with your accessories. Consider wearing a statement piece or two, but do not go overboard. What's over board you ask? Well, here are a few examples. Generally, anything that would be distracting with noise or bright colors should be avoided.


2. Conversation starters




In many interviews, I have complimented an interviewee on their handbag, jewelry, shoes or other accessory item. And typically, it has helped to not only give them a confidence boost, but also gets them to open up a bit ore. Interviews are meant to be conversations not interrogations, so I have found that providing a way to get the conversation started lightly helps the interviewee feel more comfortable. This allows them to think more clearly during the meeting and show more of their personality. This also works both ways. If you have an interview and you notice that one of the interviewers is wearing a nice watch or necklace, give them a compliment on it. It is a great way to start off the meeting. 


3. Attractiveness

I've explored the link between attractiveness and positive career experiences. Interviews should not be solely dependent on looks, but it is definitely something that is considered. Business Insider published an article on the topic of beauty and the workplace a few years ago. In the article, some impressive statistics are shared. "Attractive people earn an average of 3 or 4 percent more than people with below-average looks". The article quoted a professor of economics at the University of Texas at Austin. This is one thing that really caught my attention. With so much research showing how attractiveness can help people get ahead in life, we should definitely show our most attractive selves during an interview.
  
Confidence, conversation, and attractiveness are things that we can focus on to ensure we have a successful interview. Accessories just might be the spark to help us!
